Hummus Dip

Hummus is a super tasty and versatile dip or spread and goes great with lots of foods. It is great for dipping vegetable sticks or Homemade Pita Bread in. Hummus is made from chickpeas, tahini, lemon juice, garlic and spices. There is no cooking required and the only equipment you need to make it is a blender or food processor.

Hummus is vegetarian and vegan friendly. It is also nut-free, gluten-free, dairy-free and egg-free. However, it does contain sesame seeds, from the tahini. Tahini is blended up sesame seeds (sometimes it will include some oil and/or salt).

There are 2 types of tahini that you can get, hulled and unhulled. Hulled tahini is made with sesame seeds that have had their outer shell removed, unhulled has the outer shell still on. I recommend using hulled tahini as it is creamier and I think it works better with hummus.

How to make Hummus

Hummus is really easy to make. All you need is a blender or a food processor. The order in which you add the ingredients is a little important. The main thing you want to start with is blending the tahini and lemon juice together. This should always be the first step and gives you a good base.

Ungarnished hummus

After mixing the tahini and lemon juice together, you can really add ingredients in any order. I like to add the oil, garlic and salt in next (before adding in the chickpeas). This means that by the time you do add in the chickpeas, there is enough liquid to help blend them up easily.

Continue adding in all of the ingredients, besides the water, and blending/processing until smooth. Once smooth start alternating adding in some water and blending, until you reach your desired hummus consistency. Adding in the water a bit at a time stops you from making it too watery. Garnish with some smoked paprika and a drizzle of olive oil.

How to store Hummus

Store Hummus in an air tight container. In the fridge it should last up to 5 days and in the freezer it should last up to 8 months.
