Cinnamon and brown sugar popcorn, right side of the bowl

Cinnamon And Brown Sugar Popcorn

Cinnamon and Brown sugar popcorn is the perfect snack if you are after something just a little bit sweet. It is only lightly sweet and has a good amount of cinnamon flavoring. You just want to keep eating it. Great to have as a snack for parties, to eat at home or to take to work or school.

Cinnamon And Brown Sugar Popcorn

Cinnamon and Brown sugar popcorn is a lightly sweet flavored popcorn, which I will admit isn’t for everyone. Not everyone likes sweet popcorn, but if you are on the fence about it I do recommend giving this one a try. It is sweet without being overly sweet, with a good amount of cinnamon flavor. Enough for you to taste it without it being overwhelming.

This recipe is vegan and vegetarian friendly, which means that it is also dairy-free. It is quite a healthy sweet snack option. Ideal for taking as a snack for work, school or any other outings that might require a little snack.

Cinnamon And Brown Sugar Flavoring

To make the flavoring all you need to do is combine the brown sugar and ground cinnamon together in a small bowl and mix well. If you are able to then I do strongly recommend grinding the flavoring up as fine as possible, using either a spice grinder or mortar and pestle.

Feel free to substitute the brown sugar for granulated white sugar. The end result will be quite similar (a sweet cinnamon flavoring).

This recipe combines the cinnamon and brown sugar flavoring with popcorn cooked on the stove. You can cook your popcorn any way you feel like and use the cinnamon and brown sugar flavoring.

Cooking The Popcorn

For a more in-depth description on cooking popcorn on the stove, checkout Simple Stovetop Popcorn.

Heat up some oil in a medium saucepan, on a medium-low heat, with 3 popcorn kernels in it. Cover the saucepan until the 3 kernels have popped. Once they have popped, the oil is now hot enough and you should add in the remaining popcorn kernels and put the lid back on.

Let the popcorn pop in the saucepan and occasionally shake the saucepan to shake some of the unpopped kernels back to the bottom of the saucepan. You also want to occasionally lift the saucepan lid slightly (away from you!!) to release some of the steam.

Once the popping slows to once every couple of seconds. Turn off the heat and empty the popcorn into a large bowl. Sprinkle the cinnamon and brown sugar flavoring onto the popcorn (as much as is needed to suit your taste). Toss the popcorn until it is well coated in the flavoring.

Storing The Popcorn

I recommend eating cinnamon and brown sugar popcorn immediately after cooked. However, you may want to keep some of it for later, either because you can’t eat it all at once or because you want to take some as a snack when you next decide to leave the house.

Whatever your reason for wanting to store the popcorn may be, to best store popcorn keep it in an airtight container or bag (such as a ziplock bag) and keep it at room temperature. Ideally keep it in a cupboard or a pantry, away from direct sunlight.

Ingredients

Cinnamon And Brown Sugar Flavoring

  • 1 1/2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon

Popcorn

  • 3 tbsp coconut oil (or oil of choice)
  • 1/2 cup popcorn kernels

Instructions

Cinnamon And Brown Sugar Flavoring

  • Combine brown sugar and ground cinnamon together in a small bowl. Mix until well combined.
  • (optional) Grind cinnamon and brown sugar mixture using a spice mixer or mortar and pestle. (Note 1)

Popcorn

  • Heat oil in a medium saucepan on medium-low heat, along with 3 popcorn kernels and cover with a lid.
  • After the 3 kernels have popped, add in the remaining popcorn kernels and cover the saucepan with a lid again.
  • While the popcorn is popping, shake the saucepan to shake some of the unpopped kernels to the bottom. Also occasionally lift the saucepan lid away from you to let out some of the steam.
  • Once the popping has slowed down to once every couple of seconds, turn off the heat and empty the popcorn into a large bowl.
  • Sprinkle the cinnamon and brown sugar flavoring onto the popcorn, to suit taste, and toss until the popcorn is well coated. (Note 2)

Notes

  1. Grinding up the flavoring will make it much finer and will help it stick to the popcorn better.
  2. I like to start with roughly 1 tablespoon of the flavoring, taste it and then add more if I feel like it.
