Super Crispy Chickpeas In The Air Fryer

Crispy chickpeas are a super tasty snack, that are quick and really easy to make at home in an air fryer. Using an air fryer makes the chickpeas come out really crispy and cooks them much quicker than in the oven. An easy to make, healthy snack that can be enjoyed at home, work or school.

Air Fryer Crispy Chickpeas

Crispy chickpeas, also known as garbanzo beans, make a great healthy snack. Often you will see them roasted in the oven, but you can get them really crispy in an air fryer as well and it is much quicker.

This is a vegetarian and vegan friendly snack. It is also gluten-free and friendly for most allergies or dietary requirements.

There are other uses for crispy chickpeas besides just eating them by themselves as a snack (which I do very much enjoy). Try adding them into salads, or on wraps to add a bit of a crunchy texture to your meals.

Air Frying

To cook crispy chickpeas, start by draining and rinsing a can of chickpeas. It is easiest to rinse the chickpeas in a colander over the sink. Try to rinse the chickpeas until the water no longer bubbles up.

You can also use dried chickpeas that have been cooked. You will need about 1 1/2 cups of cooked chickpeas, this should be equivalent to the amount of chickpeas from a standard can.

There is no need to dry the chickpeas after rinsing as they will dry out when cooking in the air fryer. Simply toss them in a tablespoon of oil and some salt (I used 1 tsp of salt). If you want to make the chickpeas with no oil then simply leave it out at this point.

Make sure to preheat the air fryer to 390°F/200°C before cooking. Place the rinsed chickpeas in the air fryer basket and cook for 15 minutes, shaking every 5 minutes to ensure even cooking. Once the chickpeas are golden and crispy, or cooked as desired, empty them into a bowl to serve.

Each air fryer is different so times may vary slightly.

Flavoring Air Fryer Crispy Chickpeas

This recipe just flavors the chickpeas with salt to keep it simple. You can flavor them with whatever seasoning you want though. I often enjoy flavoring mine with the same BBQ flavoring from my BBQ Flavored Popcorn recipe.

If you want to add extra flavoring or seasoning to the chickpeas, it is best to do so after the chickpeas have finished cooking in the air fryer. Just sprinkle the seasoning over the cooked chickpeas and toss them to coat evenly.

Storing The Crispy Chickpeas

To best keep the chickpeas nice and crispy, store them at room temperature covered by foil or in a paper bag. Storing the chickpeas in the fridge, or in a completely air tight container, will result in them losing their crispiness.

Properly cooked chickpeas will be safe to eat for 3 days, left at room temperature. However they are best consumed as soon as possible.
