Honey Soy Chicken Wings – Oven Baked

These Honey soy chicken wings are amazingly easy to make and a great food for crowds. Great both as a snack and part of a more substantial meal. This honey soy chicken wing recipe uses an oven, making it low effort, with the wings coming out of the oven golden brown and beautifully sticky.

Honey Soy Chicken Wings

These chicken wings are marinated in a very flavorsome honey soy marinade. It combines the saltiness of soy sauce with the sweetness of honey to make a wonderfully balance marinade. It also has garlic in it because firstly I love garlic and secondly it goes great with both the honey and the soy.

The marinated chicken wings are then baked in the oven. Cooking them in the oven allows for larger batches to be cooked at once. This is much more convenient when trying to cater for a larger amount of people.

Honey soy chicken wings are great when eaten on their own or they can be served alongside rice. I personally love serving these wings with fried rice for dinner.

How To Make Honey Soy Marinade

The marinade is actually super simple to make. Start by combining equal amounts of soy sauce and honey. Then add in 4 cloves of minced garlic and a 1/2 tablespoon of rice vinegar (or vinegar of choice) for every 1/4 cup of honey and soy. I like to add the little bit of vinegar just to balance the sweetness of the honey and the saltiness of the soy sauce a tiny bit.

Mix all of these ingredients together in a bowl. It is good to mix the marinade separate to the wings to ensure that the honey doesn’t clump up. This is especially true when adding the marinade to something cold such as chicken wings.

You can make the marinade a few days ahead of time if you do not want to use it immediately.

Cooking The Chicken Wings

My preferred method for cooking honey soy chicken wings is in the oven. Honey has a habit of burning, because of that we cook these wings at a much lower temperature compared to other wing recipes. This does mean that the wings will not come out crispy. However they will be sticky and still taste amazing.

A wire rack is pretty essential for this recipe. The excess marinade is going to drip off of the chicken and this tends to burn in the oven quite easily. We want to keep the burning marinade as far away from the wings as possible, hence the wire rack.

As for how long to cook honey soy chicken wings. I find that 25-30 minutes on one side and then flipping and cooking for another 15-20 minutes works well. It browns the chicken wings enough to give them flavor but not too much that they burn. This makes the total cooking time for these chicken wings 40-50 minutes.

To serve, if you feel like it, garnish the wings with some thinly sliced scallions (green onions) and/or sesame seeds.

Dietary and Substitutions

To make these chicken wings gluten-free all you need to do is make sure that the soy sauce that you are using is gluten-free. Chances are that if the soy sauce does not say gluten free in large letters on the label then it contains gluten.

The honey soy marinade is very versatile. You can use it to marinate lots of things, not just chicken wings. For example it works great with other parts of the chicken. Obviously cooking times for the oven will differ slightly in this case.

Storing Honey Soy Chicken Wings

Storing the honey soy marinade, with the garlic, in an airtight container can have it last up to 5 days in the fridge. If you avoid putting the garlic in then the marinade should last much longer. This is because all of the other ingredients have quite a long shelf life.

Cooked wings can last up to 4 days in the fridge or up to 6 months in the freezer, this is if you are storing them properly in an airtight container. Another nice idea is to mix the marinade with the wings and freeze before cooking. This provides an easy future meal to cook.
