This homemade BBQ pizza sauce is nice and sweet with a slight tang to it. It is perfect to use as a pizza sauce. Really quick and easy to make, allowing for delicious BBQ based pizza at any time.
BBQ Pizza Sauce
BBQ sauce is a delicious pizza sauce base to use. It adds a sweetness to the pizza that pairs really nicely with many types of pizza toppings. This particular pizza sauce recipe has become a favorite in my household. It is now often the preferred choice of pizza sauce over a standard tomato base.
This BBQ sauce is made up of ketchup, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard powder, onion powder and salt. You can easily customize this sauce recipe by adding in whichever herbs or spices you feel like.
Cooking The BBQ Sauce
Combine all of the ingredients together in a small saucepan, on medium-low heat, and whisk to combine everything.
Let the sauce come to a simmer and let it simmer for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it is nice and thick. You will be able to tell that the sauce is thick enough when you can scrape a wooden spoon along the bottom of the saucepan and the sauce (at least briefly) holds it’s shape.
I recommend partially covering the sauce while it is simmering. This will allow for the steam to escape but will prevent it splattering everywhere (it can get quite messy if you don’t do this).
Storing And Using The Sauce
Let the sauce cool to room temperature before putting it in the fridge and letting it cool completely. You can use the sauce immediately but I do strongly recommend letting it cool in the fridge. This allows for the tanginess of the sauce to mellow out and more of the sweetness come through. I find that the sauce can sometimes be a bit too tangy without doing this.
This recipe makes roughly 3/4 of a cup of sauce. It is best to keep the sauce in an airtight container in the fridge until you are ready to use it. I like to keep mine in a jar.
When using the sauce on a pizza I enjoy using a thin layer of the sauce with lots of toppings. My favorite is to have it on a meat pizza, with lots of ham, pepperoni, salami and any other meats I have on hand.
This sauce is also just a nice BBQ sauce in general and can be used in place of any other BBQ sauce requirements that you may have.

- 1/3 cup brown sugar packed
- 3 tbsp apple cider vinegar or vinegar of choice
- 1 tsp worcestershire sauce
- 1/4 tsp mustard powder
- 1/4 tsp onion powder
- 1/4 tsp salt
Instructions
- Combine all ingredients together in a small saucepan, on medium-low heat.
- Whisk everything together until it is all well combined and bring the mixture to a simmer.
- Partially cover the saucepan (Note 1) and let the sauce simmer for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it has thickened. (Note 2)
- Let the sauce cool to room temperature before placing in the fridge to cool completely. (Note 3)
- Use as desired on pizzas.
Notes
- Partially covering the saucepan allows for steam to escape and helps prevent the sauce splattering all over the place.
- The easiest way to tell if the sauce has thickened enough is to scrape a wooden spoon along the bottom of the bottom of the saucepan. If the sauce holds it’s shape and doesn’t immediately cover the exposed saucepan then it is ready.
- The sauce can be used immediately but I find that letting the sauce cool completely in the fridge allows for the tanginess to mellow out a bit, which I enjoy more.
- Makes about 3/4 cup of sauce.
